Fair trade in Gillingham

Investigations will be taken out to ascertain this information and make this a complete list - this is just a starter based on what is already known. Please don't be offended if you sell or use Fairtrade products and aren't here - let us know and you will added promtly!

"Fairtrade" and "fair trade"
At present only commodities and products made from them can be certified as Fairtrade and carry the FAIRTRADE mark. However, that only covers the production of that commodity. e.g. where marked as Fairtrade, the cotton growers will have benefitted from the fair trade but a tee shirt can still have been produced in a sweat shop! Try to think about the ethics of the company and whether you trust them (e.g. you will probably want to trust companies set up to help people through Fairtrade like Traidcraft far more than a supermarket with a reputation of treating British farmers badly).

Churches
There is probably more to add here - this is what is known of prior to investigation
The Parish Church of St. Mary the Virgin (Anglican)
became a Fairtrade Church in November 2008 but has used mostly Fairtrade tea and coffee after services and for most events for some years. A Traidcraft stall is present regularly at coffee time after the main Sunday service and at some other events (e.g. the Spring Fair and Grand Christmas coffee morning).
In April 2008 a Fairtrade evening was held when after a supper with lots of Fairtrade ingredients a talk was given by Traidcraft Fairtrader Teresa Goatham about her "Meet the Producer tour" of South Africa. With the food and drink given, donations for Traidcraft Exchange were invited and about £200 raised (before Gift Aid and also being doubled by Teresa's employer Friends Provident).
Thanks also to St. Mary's for hosting these webpages and the initial meetings to set get a Fairtrade campaign going.
